about
"When the Sun Goes Down" felt immediately relevant and pressing when it crawled up out of the drain last October. We drafted recent Philly transplant Chris Lauf (inner ear brigade) to add some emergency drums and tried to get it out before the election, which stacked on the pandemic and police killings had most everyone we knew in a state of poisonous delirium.
Didn't happen.
A year went by, and the saddest thing became clear. That darkness of that moment wasn't momentary. It's been around a long time and won't leave just because people want to unsee it.
So here's "When the Sun Goes Down."
It's of that moment, and this moment, but we're struggling for the day when it's just a tarnished relic the kids don't understand.
lyrics
Lyrics
Well we’re all pretty much lizards
With fleshy little palms and opposable thumbs
Chewing rocks in our vestigial gizzards
Huffing and puffing ‘til our eyes go numb
Chorus
Don’t you come around here when the sun goes down
Don’t you come around here when the sun goes down
Don’t you come around here when the sun goes down
Don you come around, don’t you come around
Get a grip on yourself before someone else does
Get a hold of your friends while they’re still your friends
If that rainbow sheen means what I think that it means
We were all just a means to an ends
Chorus
That ain’t fear that you’re smelling that’s just dinner
You like to party you might like this party, it feels just like a mob
We take our neighbor, who we love so dearly and we separate them from the sinners
That ain’t a man, in a cage, it’s a job
Chorus
And if you breathe in just right, it won’t hurt when they hit you
And if you smile just right, they might not hit you at all
But let that smile slip, kid, you better bite your bottom lip
This is America, and we’re having a fucking ball
Chorus
